Sports Massage is the manipulation of soft tissue (skin, fascia, muscle, ligaments and tendons) using a variety of specialist massage techniques with the view to helping to alleviate a wide range of symptoms and conditions. Sports Massage can be a “stand-alone” treatment i.e. you can book a massage purely because you want one, in which case you simply complete a medical consultation form and providing there are no contraindications or noticeable postural deviations, you have a Sports Massage. Alternatively Sports Massage can be a method of treatment used in Sports Therapy (i.e. remedial) and would be used by your Sports Therapist to alleviate a wide range of symptoms and conditions. Sports Massage is a hands-on therapy requiring the use of oils to enable the therapist’s hands to manipulate the soft tissues without causing unnecessary discomfort to the you. Prior to your first Sports Massage you need to complete a Confidential Client Consultation Form.

Symptoms and conditions treated include;

  • aches and pain
  • muscle spasm
  • head aches
  • tension
  • trigger points
  • postural irregularities
  • tight & shortened muscles
  • strains
  • sprains
  • reduction of scar tissue
  • restricted range of motion
  • lymphatic drainage
  • balancing your autonomic nervous system

How does it differ from Swedish Massage?
Clinical Sports Massage employs a wider selection of techniques than Swedish (beauty therapy) Massage and is often aimed at treating a condition (i.e. remedial) rather than just making you feel "chilled". The techniques are deeper and you may be placed into several positions to ensure the best possible access to all parts of the muscles being treated. Specific stretches (MET - Muscle Energy Techniques) are also used where there is evidence of muscle tightness and, if caught at the right time, scar tissue resulting from strains / sprains can be reduced. If you have an injury or have particularly tight muscles, Sports Massage can be a little uncomfortable but at the end of the treatment you will feel a million dollars!

Sports Massage is also offered pre-sport, during sport and post-sport.
