SAQ (Speed, Agility & Quickness) drills are one of the most effective means by which major improvement can be made in dynamic sports. They are designed to help transfer the strength gains made using resistance training programs into dynamic power and speed based movement patterns typical of many sports. The ability to move rapidly and change directions without loss of momentum is crucial in gaining an edge over the competition. With a comprehensive and well designed SAQ program (including balance and reaction time drills) your efforts should be rewarded with positive results. Equipment used includes agility ladder, agility poles, mini hurdles, medicine balls, reaction balls, cones, markers, mats and video recording. To ensure proper progression is made and the risk of injury is reduced I impliment programs according to the season i.e. pre-season, during season and post season. This allows skills to be developed at a manageable rate allowing the body sufficient time to adapt and then reproduce them. SAQs are used at all levels of sporting endeavour (especially at professional level) and I believe it is safe to say that if you fail to include SAQ drills in your programme you place yourself at a distinct competitive disadvantage. I have worked with Old Thorntonian F.C. first team for a couple of seasons and they have certainly noticed the benefits. If you would lke to book some sessions for your club (irrespective of the sport) please contact me.
